Cary Bibb To Head Up Hawks Hoops
April M. Fronick
One of the two varsity basketball coaching positions has been filled at Clopton as Bowling
Green native Cary Bibb has signed on to skipper the boy’s program along with assisting
the new football program.
With 18 years in coaching, Bibb has spent the past six years in the Brookfield School
District where he is the head varsity basketball coach and assistant junior high football
coach. The 1985 Bowling Green High School graduate said he’s thrilled to be moving back
to Pike County and is looking forward to taking the reigns of a program that has been
challenged over the past couple of years.
“I love coaching. We’re very excited for the opportunity to be involved in an extremely
classy school district,” Bibb said.
He met with basketball players last week. He noted the boys will have a summer program
once logistics have been mapped out and the team has already signed up for a couple of
shoot-outs.
“The first thing we’ll be concentrating on is how not to lose,” Bibb explained. “We’ll be
working on how to guard and stop the runs, not turning the ball over for easy layups and
giving up uncontested shots.”
He pointed out the team will improve as much as the players are willing to devote their time
and energy to improvement.
“They have a great basketball tradition at Clopton,” Bibb noted.
While basketball is Bibb’s passion, he also enjoys football and will have the opportunity to
help Clopton in its first year with a varsity program.
“That’s really exciting. I’m happy to be coming in on the ground level with the program. It’s
going to be a great experience.”
Bibb has a lot of experience in coaching other sports besides boy’s basketball. After
graduating from Central Methodist University in Fayette, Bibb coached track and football
for one year at Kemper Military School. He moved to the Wellsville-Middletown School
District for five years as athletic director, boy’s and girl’s track and cross country coach.
He spent a year in the Winfield School District as assistant football coach and head track
coach and four years in Sedalia as a football and baseball coach. All this while coaching
basketball.
He will also be teaching physical education and health at the junior high and high school
levels.
Bibb’s wife, Janese, also accepted a teaching position that is part-time special education
and part-time federal program coordinator.
Eight months ago the couple had twin daughters, Dianna and Claire. Bibb pointed out that
after the birth of their children, they were eager to move closer to family. Bibb’s parents,
Bonham and Joyce, still reside in Bowling Green.
Bibb joked that the excitement to move closer to home is the understatement of the year.
Clopton Superintendent Terry Robertson said the board unanimously selected Bibb and
are very pleased he accepted the district’s offer. He added the district continues to search
for a girl’s basketball head coach. The board has sifted through applications from three
states and has already seen one candidate turn down an offer. Robertson said the
process may take more time than originally expected.
